Crowds cheering the Olympic Torch Relay through Haringey were double the expected figures according to police.

Police had originally estimated up to 90,000 people would line the streets to watch the Olympic flame make its way through the borough.

However according to police it is estimated crowds swelled up to 180,000, double the original estimate and the largest turnout of any borough on day 68 of the relay.

On one of the hottest days of the year crowds were out in force along the torch relay route which ran through Tottenham and Wood Green before ending its journey at Alexandra Palace.

Haringey Council leader Clair Kober said: “It was a memorable day for thousands of people in Haringey as the whole community came together to celebrate the Olympics.

“Whether at Bruce Castle, Alexandra Park or along the route everyone shared in the excitement of the torch passing through our borough and will have many special memories to take away. It was Haringey at its best."
