Tottenham MP David Lammy said he supports the Haringey Independent’s bid to get the sentencing of people caught in possession of knives extended to those under the age of 18.

He said: “I’ve seen how knife crime has devastated families and communities all across London.

“Community groups that work with our young people to educate them on the dangers of knife possession and getting involved gangs need to be properly funded and supported.

“But we shouldn’t be afraid of coming down hard on those that ignore all those warnings and insist on endangering themselves and others.

“There is simply no excuse to carry a knife — no ifs, no buts.”
