AN Enfield MP called on the Prime Minister today to join 40 other MPs and back the Don't Carry, Don't Kill campaign by the Enfield Independent.

Enfield North MP Nick de Bois asked David Cameron at Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons whether he would support an amendment for under 18s that use a knife in a threatening or endangering fashion.

Current Government proposals would limit the punishment to those over the age of 18, but we have joined forces with Mr de Bois to push for the laws to tackle the scourge of knife crime among young people.

Mr Cameron said: “I will certainly look closely at what my Honourable Friend says and I know the Justice Secretary is doing this too.

“We do want to move ahead with the mandatory sentence for adults and we'll look very carefully at the arguments my Honourable Friend makes.”

Mr de Bois has already met with Justice Secretary Ken Clarke to discuss the amendment he has tabled, and he has also met with a coalition of anti-knife crime campaign groups including Solve This Ongoing Problem, Anti-Knife UK, the Nelson Williams Foundation, TAGS and GANGLINE.

This year in Enfield, two teenage boys and a young man have been stabbed to death on our streets, and we believe urgent action is needed to reverse the knife crime culture on our streets.

A petition signed by hundreds of Enfield residents will be handed to Parliament in the next few weeks, as the push for an amendment to the proposed legislation moves forward.
