TWO Haringey schools have picked up road safety awards for their plans to encourage pupils to walk or cycle to school.
Earlsmead Primary School, in Broad Lane, Tottenham, and Our Lady of Muswell Roman Catholic School, in Pages Lane, received the Transfort for London (TfL) Sustainable Level Accreditation Award for showing commitment to environmentally-friendly travel.
Councillor John Bevan, cabinet member for housing, environment and conservation, went to both schools to meet youngsters and to present their award at the school assemblies last week.
Cllr Bevan said: "I am really proud of these young people and the teachers who made the effort to produce fantastic school travel plans which make the journey to and from school safer for everyone.
"By encouraging people to walk to school rather than be driven, they are keeping healthy and helping Haringey cut carbon emissions. Clearly, if there are fewer cars on the roads around school buildings, children will be safer and their journeys home less stressful."
A total of 20 schools were awarded at the sustainable level and seven schools awarded at higher level in 2009.
