AN INTERFAITH event in Radlett will be held for Mitzvah day, a Jewish-led initiative that encourages people of all faiths to donate their time to charity.

The event, organised by the Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue, in Watling Street, will be a clean-up at King George V Playing fields, in Cobden Hill, Radlett.

Radlett institutions involved in the event will include the reform synagogue, Radlett United Synagogue, Christ Church, St John’s Church, the United Free Church and muslim representatives. They will be joined by hindu representatives from Bhaktivedanta Manor and St John the Baptist Church, from neighbouring Aldenham.

Organiser Elizabeth Crossick, from Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue, said: “It’s a lovely idea and we know it will be a less lovely job to do but very worthwhile in the end.

“Among other things we will be cleaning the place up and cutting brambles. We’ve been working closely with the council to organise this.

“People are very welcome to turn up on the day and help out. They should bring gloves, boots and warm clothes.

“It is all weather-dependent but we are hoping for a fun day and we have the synagogue open afterwards for tea and hot chocolate.”

The event will be attended by Hertsmere MP, James Clappison.

Organiser Reverend Maureen Taylor, representing Christ Church and St John's Church and the Radlett Branch of the Council of Christians and Jews, said: “So often we don’t get the opportunity to work together like this so we are excited we now will be able to take part in this event.

“It’s about bringing everyone together and working on a project that can be beneficial for everyone.

"We are very happy to also have James coming along who will definitely be handed a spade to help out when he gets there."

People who wish to take part in the event can gather at the field at 1.30pm for a 2pm start on Sunday, November 21. For more information contact 01923 856110.

The Borehamwood and Elstree Times will also be getting involved, offering charities and organisations the chance to win a team of willing volunteers for Mitzvah Day, on Sunday, November 21.

Last year, a team from the Times Series newsroom rejuvenated the run-down garden of Oak Lodge School, in East Finchley, which caters for youngsters with special needs.

Now the team are readying themselves once more to lend a helping hand to a worthy cause in the community.

Any group, charity or organisation is eligible to enter and any task will be considered for Mitzvah Day.

Perhaps you know of a community centre that needs redecorating or allotments and green spaces that need clearing? Or maybe you would like the volunteers to visit special needs children or entertain elderly residents in a care home?

Simply submit your idea by emailing assistant editor Francine Wolfisz at fwolfisz@london.newsquest.co.uk or calling 0208 359 5921.

The closing date for entries is Friday, November 5.
