The former head of Wales's public spending watchdog has appeared in court accused of possessing hundreds of indecent images of children.

Jeremy Colman, 61, was the auditor general for Wales until he stood down suddenly and without explanation last month. Colman, of Longueville, Peterborough, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court to face 14 separate charges of possessing and making indecent images of children between October 2008 and January 2010.

He is also charged with one offence of failing to reveal the password of a memory stick which would allow police to view material it contains.

Colman, who has a home in Dinas Powys, south Wales, gave his address as The Village, Orton. He was represented by Zaki Hashmi, a lawyer who travelled from London today for the brief hearing.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction of the case and adjourned it until April 30 for formal committal to Crown Court. Colman was released on conditional bail.
