Portraits for Posterity


Holocaust survivors from Haringey have shared their amazing stories for a photographic exhibition. Portraits for Posterity was started three years ago by photographer Matt Writtle and writers Jacki Reason and Jan Marsh. The exhibition, at the Jewish Cultural Centre in Golders Green, Barnet, runs until March 18.

  • Jerzy Lando: “A question haunted me: what kind of world and what sort of cultured people allowed all this to happen?”
  • Joan Salter: “Being a Holocaust survivor was the last thing I wanted to be. I just wanted to be normal.”
  • Jozsef Von Treuenburg: “I was stoned as a ‘bloody Jew’ before my fifth birthday and witnessed frightening attacks.”
  • Roman Halter: “My whole family was murdered. From my town of Chodecz, where 800 Jews lived, four of us survived.”
  • Susan Halter: “Having gone through a very traumatic time, I hope my grand- children and future generations will live in harmony.”
