Calls to protect police stations in Haringey

Further calls have been made for guarantees over the future of police stations which face possible closure.

The calls come after Mayor of London Boris Johnson refused to rule out the possibility of closing police counters in Haringey as part of cuts to the capital’s police budget.

He also said he could only guarantee one 24 hour police station in each London borough.

Liberal Democrats in Haringey are calling on the Mayor to re-consider his plans and protect police stations in the borough, with Councillor Richard Wilson, leader of the Lib Dem group, writing to the mayor.

He said: “This is a real concern, Haringey needs more than one police station open to the public 24 hours a day.

“Crime is a big issue across the borough and residents rightly expect that the police should be available to help them at any time of the day or night.”

MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Lynne Featherstone has also backed the calls for a guarantee over police stations saying it would be “unfair” and “unsafe” to cut much need police services in Haringey.

Stations which are under threat include Hornsey, St. Ann’s and Muswell Hill which will make up £380million of savings from the closure of police stations across London.
