Hundreds of skaters whizzed around an ice rink on Saturday in a bid to smash a world record for the longest conga on ice.

The record attempt, which started at Alexandra Palace Ice Rink from 5pm, was in memory of 17-year-old Alexandra Wylie, who died from cancer two years ago.

The event raised money for the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation, which was set up to help underprivileged young people get involved in the sciences, performing arts, outdoor activities and environmental projects.

The group will find out in the coming weeks if they have beaten the record - which currently stands at 260 skaters - once the entry has been verified by  the Guinness World Records.
