Families in Haringey owe more than £10,000 in debt repayments, figures show.
The statistics, released by the Children’s Society and StepChange Debt, show 2,637 families in Tottenham collectively owe £5,622,365.
In Hornsey and Wood Green, 2,223 families are struggling to make repayments and pay their household bills with a debt of £4,740,426.
A further 4,670 children in Tottenham and 3,938 children in Hornsey and Wood Green are living in families who are unable to afford their monthly bills.
Matthew Reed, chief executive of The Children’s Society, said: “Families in London are increasingly relying on debt as a way to make ends meet – but we’re in danger of ignoring the impact this is having on children now and in the future. We cannot allow children to pay the price of debt.
“With little savings to fall back on, it can take just one unexpected setback - like illness or being made redundant – to tip a family over the edge and into a debt trap that can feel impossible to escape from.”
