Unemployment remains stubbornly high in Tottenham, as it continues to stand at the top of the London unemployment table.
Figures for July show that those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance numbered 4,334 in July (down from 4,410 the previous month), comprising 4.7% of the working population. The average for London remains at 2.5% unemployed.
Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said: “Well, the numbers are slightly reduced, so I suppose they could be worse. However, they are nearly double the London rate. It has been a problem for years.
“Even where jobs are created they are pretty low-wage. Whichever way you look at it, it shouldn’t be the case that Tottenham keeps topping the table.”
