Councillors have vowed to put a stop to fly tipping after tonnes of rubbish began appearing in the borough’s streets.

The Noel Park area, near Hornsey and Muswell Hill, has seen an increase in litter in its residential roads and parks.

More than 50 people attended a meeting at the Wood Green Civic Centre, in High Road, to discuss the problem.

It was also attended by representatives from the council’s street cleaning contractor Veolia, Noel Park Councillor Peray Ahmet and cabinet member for environment Stuart McNamara.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr McNamara said: “Some people were quite passionate about it, and I share their passion.

“It’s a complex issue, and a meeting won’t solve it overnight, but it created a framework. I am very keen to repeat the process.

“We are going to be trying some new and innovative things to solve the problem of fly tipping. We can recycle almost anything in this borough.”

There will be more meetings to discuss fly tipping in Noel Park in October and November.

Cllr McNamara added: “We have a large and rising population. It’s not a surprise we get these problems, but it’s important the work we do continues.

“We do prosecute people and we will continue to do so. It’s about getting the right balance.

“It’s a very important issue and I understand the concerns. I am determined we make progress on this.”
