Spurs have been criticised by fans angry at the prospect of leaving Tottenham for a season.

In a statement released today, Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust warns of the “peril” of leaving White Hart Lane.

The concerns have been raised following yesterday’s announcement that the team will leave the current ground for at least one season while a new stadium is built.

The trust’s board said the idea of the club playing outside Tottenham “threatens serious damage” to Spurs’ identity and called for “greater transparency” over the decision to move.

It said: “Our greatest concern is that, once the club moves for one season, it is but a short step towards moving for two seasons, or more.

“When the club’s current board tried to move us to Stratford, Tottenham Hotspur supporters showed their fierce opposition and we would urge the club to learn the lessons from that episode.”

It added: "A football club divorces itself from its community and identity at its peril".

The trust also raised concerns about the expense to fans of travelling to home games if the club moves.

Spurs also announced yesterday that the new stadium would now be “highly unlikely” to be ready for the 2017/2018 season following a fresh legal challenge from Archway Sheet Metals.

The metalwork business is challenging the recent decision by Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to grant Haringey Council permission to issue a Compulsory Purchase Order for the firm's site.

Archway is the last remaining firm operating on the site of the planned stadium.

The trust said the new delay could have “serious economic implications” for the those “depending upon the stadium project as a catalyst for regeneration”, adding it was “surprising” that negotiations between the club and the metalwork business have "continued for seven years without resolution".

It added: “We are at a loss to understand why the legal process is taking so much longer on this matter than other comparable projects.

"We would hope that, in the interests of all parties, there is a swift resolution to this appeal.”
