MP David Lammy has branded the shortage of GPs in Tottenham “unacceptable” and says he will urgently raise the issue with the health secretary.
Mr Lammy’s comments follow the publication of a report by Healthwatch Haringey outlining a serious lack of GPs in the borough, especially in Tottenham Hale.
He said: “I am deeply disturbed by the findings of this report, which confirms what I have been hearing from constituents recently.
“It is unacceptable that so many Tottenham residents cannot gain access to a GP quickly, and as a consequence our emergency services at North Middlesex Hospital are becoming overwhelmed with patients.
“I intend to urgently raise this issue with Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health, at the earliest opportunity when Parliament returns.”
The report claimed that neither NHS England (London) nor the Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group has a strategy in place to deal with the crisis.
NHS England (London) and the Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group say they are aware of the shortage and will prioritise Tottenham.
