A community figure who claimed to be the first black man in Tottenham has died.

Former athletics champion and racial equality campaigner Bill Guy, who moved to Haringey in 1950, died yesterday afternoon.

A world champion at 100m and 200m sprinting, he became the fastest man in the world over the age 55 when he ran 100m in 11.89 seconds.

In 2008 he was nominated an “everyday hero” by  the people of Tottenham for his work promoting racial equality.
