A man has been jailed for more than two years for a hit-and-run.

Lee Smith, 23, of Chester Road, was sentenced on Friday at Wood Green Crown Court having failed to stop his car after mowing down a 27-year-old woman in September.

At the time, Smith was being chased by police after having failed to stop when asked by officers in Colindale.

He then hit a pedestrian in Shepherds Hill, near the junction with Archway.

Police were forced to continue chasing Smith while the woman was rushed to hospital with severe injuries.

She is currently recovering but still unable to walk.

Passing sentence, Mr Recorder Hehir said Smith's driving had been "appalling and terrifying”, and that CCTV footage of the police chase made “chilling viewing”.

Mr Hehir said Smith had left his victim "lying at the roadside like a rag doll."

He added: "Tribute must be paid to the police driver, PC David Millsip, who demonstrated consummate skill and professionalism throughout the pursuit."

Smith’s car, a black Ford Focus, was later found in Sheldon Road, Highgate.

Smith appeared in Highbury Magistrates Court on Friday, September 19, where he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving with no insurance and failing to stop after a road collision.

At Wood Green Crown Court he was jailed for two years and eight months for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, three months for driving while disqualified, and three months for failing to stop.

He was disqualified from driving for five years subject to an extended retest.
