Haringey Council has set targets for creating jobs in the borough over the next three years.

The goals were agreed at the council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday and set objectives for getting people into work in Haringey.

Plans drawn up by the council aim to move Haringey away from being a ‘dormitory borough’ for commuters working elsewhere in the city to a place that people work in.

Over the next three years the council aims to get 1,100 local people into work through direct council investment and create 1,235 new jobs in Haringey, as well as 200 apprenticeships for young people.

These goals form part of Haringey Council’s economic and development growth strategy to turn the borough into a national hub for modern small and medium businesses.

Councillor Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for economic development, social inclusion and sustainability, said: “We’re already seeing a boom in artisan producers, textile manufacturers and technical firms choosing to make Haringey their home, and we’re determined to make it clear to new companies in these industries that this is where they should be doing business.

“Alongside this, we’ll be speaking to universities, working with colleges and pumping in investment to provide the skills, training and work experience opportunities local young people need to take advantage of the thousands of new jobs being created.”
