Tottenham Hotspur hero Dave Mackay was hailed as “the bravest man in the world” at his funeral by ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

People lined the streets of Edinburgh to watch the funeral procession for the double winning Spurs player, which set off from Tynecastle Stadium, home to Heart of Midlothian for whom he also played, to a memorial service in the city.

Former Spurs star Alan Mullery attended the service along with legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who led the tributes.

Mr Ferguson said: “They talk about this great courage he had and I think that is unfair.

“I know he was the bravest man in the world but he was a fantastic footballer, he was skilful.

“His personality, his intensity, his desire to win could make any team.”

Mackay captained Hearts to the Scottish League title during the 1957-58 season and joined Spurs in 1959.

He was an integral part of the Lilywhites team, which became the first English side to win the league and FA Cup double in the modern era during the 1960-61 season.
