A young man who took his own life after suffering in silence from depression has been remembered with a five-a-side tournament for charity.

Lanfranco Gaglione committed suicide in 2012 at the age of 26 after suffering from depression.

Now his friends and brother Giancarlo organise a football tournament each year in his memory and to raise awareness about suicide in young men, the biggest killer of men under 50 in the United Kingdom.

Lanfranco’s nickname was ‘Baron’ and the competition is named after him using his the distinctive moniker.

The Lan The Baron World Cup in Downhills Park, Tottenham, is a five-a-side tournament in which people sign up to represent different countries from across the globe in a mini-world cup.

This year, the event attracted more players than ever before with more than 100 people in 16 teams taking part.

Giancarlo Gaglione, organiser and brother of Lan, said: “It went really well and there was a great turn out on the day, we have had some great feedback from everyone involved.”

More than half the participants were playing in the competition for the first time, including for eventual winners Wales, and for the second year running Denmark was represented by an all female team.

Giancarlo continued: “Having new people come along is fantastic, it’s the whole point of the event, spreading awareness about depression and mental health issues in young men.

“It was great to see the ladies team here again, they played well and gave the guys a good run for their money.”

In total the event raised £1,200 which will be donated to mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably or CALM which works to prevent male suicide in the UK.

Professional referee Iomut Mitrache was taking charge of five-a-side games for the first time at the tournament.

He said: “It was something with a difference definitely, I didn’t really have to do much because it was all very good natured and a friendly atmosphere.

“The charity vibe certainly came through in the matches, which was nice given the reason everybody was taking part.

“I enjoyed it and will definitely be back again next year if I am invited.”

The world cup is organised by the Lan The Baron Foundation to honour the memory of Lanfranco through the principles he stood for.

The website describes him as a “musical genius, keen footballer and Baron.”
