A “Hard working” “quiet” and “kind” father gunned down in the street has been remembered fondly by people in the community.

Erdogan Guzel, a 42 year-old father of two, was shot dead in Lordship Lane, Wood Green, on Friday.

A 51 year-old woman was also shot and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Police believe the pair were not the intended target of the shooting and traders in Wood Green have remembered Mr Guzel as a kind and helpful man.

Cozy Yurdakul, manager of Cozy Fried Chicken, said: “He was a very quiet person, very peaceful and a good man. I never saw him have any trouble or arguments with anyone, he had two kids he loved very much.

“He was my neighbour and friend for years and we used to speak all the time, everybody liked him and the whole street is upset.

“My brother was with him at the time and was lucky not to get shot, it all happened so quickly. His death is something you would never expect and he is dead for no reason. It’s just so sad, I just can’t get the image of him lying there covered in blood out of my mind, it’s like a bad dream.”

The shooting took place outside Bros Bakery, owned by Mr Guzel, at around 5.45pm on Friday.

The Metropolitan Police's Homicide and Major Crime Command are still investigating and appealing for information.

A witness to the incident who did not want to be named said: “If he saw you ten times a day he would always say hello and he was always there if you needed anything and always very kind, it’s very sad.

“I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, I almost got caught up in it as I nearly parked where the woman did, I keep thinking ‘oh my god it could have been me’.

“I saw his wife this morning and she was very upset and crying a lot, I told her to be strong. Everyone would have something nice to say about him, to think I’ll never see him again hurts a lot.”

Police have echoed accounts given by witnesses, saying the two victims were probably not the intended targets.

Flowers and tributes have been laid at the scene outside the now closed bakery with a police cordon and officer presence in place.

Mehmet Cetin, director of MetroExpress cabs a few doors down from the bakery, said: “He was a very likeable person, a local businessman who had committed himself to working hard and he was an important part of this street.

“It won’t be the same without him and he’ll be missed for sure but what can you do? Those of us who are left must carry on with life.”

There have been no arrests.
