Charities chosen by mayors from across north London have been given a £7,000 boost after a rubbish trail visit.

The donations were made by London Waste Limited after Haringey deputy mayor Councillor Ali Gul Ozbek and mayors from Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest visited the Edmonton EcoPark.to find out what happens to household rubbish and recyclables.

They discovered that 40 per cent of compost was returned to community initiatives for free, such as allotments, while the rest was sold to farmers.

Cllr Ali Gul Ozbek said: “This has been a rewarding visit. I will make sure that schools and colleges are aware of opportunities to see the science in action here at the EcoPark.”

London Waste Limited said it hopes its donations to the charities will help encourage more people to recycle.

The money to Haringey will support homeless charity All People All Places.
