Men guilty of causing baby's death

Two men have been found guilty of causing the death of a 17-month-old baby boy in Haringey.

The child, known only as Baby P, died on August 3 2007 with a "catalogue of injuries" which included a broken back, fractured ribs and missing tooth.

Baby P was on Haringey Council's Child Protection Register at the time of his death.

Today a jury at the Old Bailey found the mother's 32-year-old live-in boyfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and their lodger Jason Owen, 36, from Bromley in South East London, guilty of causing or allowing the death of Baby P.

Both men have been found not guilty of the child's murder. His mother previously pleaded guilty to allowing the death of her child and is awaiting sentencing.

During the trial, the pathologist who performed Baby P's autopsy, professor Rupert Risden told the jury there was “no natural explanation” for the severe injuries which led to his death.

He said the baby’s broken back was so severe that it had “opened like a hinge”.

He added: "This was the result of a forceful extension, indicating the likelihood the child’s body had been put over a banister or a knee. This happened at least some days before the child’s death.”

He added damage like this would have left the child paralysed and unable to empty his bladder.

He said: “I’ve never personally seen an injury of this nature. This is the sort of thing that might occur in a road traffic accident.”

The baby's frenulum - a part of the mouth - was also torn, he had a missing tooth which was found in his stomach and old fractures were found to his ribs and right leg.

The mother’s lover and their lodger then took part in a clean-up operation to get rid of the toddler’s blood-stained clothes, the prosecution said.

CCTV footage recovered by police showed the mother’s boyfriend carrying a black bag with the dirty baby clothes to Tottenham Cemetery.

A blood-soaked baby bib was also found behind Baby P’s cot and another bag of clothes covered in his blood was found in the kitchen.

Prosecuting lawyer, QC Sally O’Neill, said: “The spotlight turns entirely on [the boyfriend] as the person who carried out these acts.

"We submit that Baby P was unlawfully killed and that the two defendants were involved in an immediate clean-up as soon as Baby P had gone from the premises and before the 999 call was made as far as his clothing was concerned.”

She added the 36-year-old cleaner from Bromley did not protect the child because he was more worried about his relationship with his 15-year-old girlfriend.

She said: “The truth is it probably did not suit his personal position because of [her]. That’s not an excuse; it’s not a defence.”

this is absolutely disguisting this poor child did not deserve anything he got, it makes me sick to think a mother could allow such cruelty, it also hits a nerve with me because i have been trying for a baby with yet no avail, its absolutely wrong that a mother could allow this, and i know people are going to say that she tried by taking him to the hospital but to me this does not redeem herself, personally i feel as a barrister, a jury should of come to the conclusion of guilty of murder for the two men and the woman should also because all of them conclusively have killed this little soul.

r.i.p. baby your pain free now, they can never hurt you again.

As a Father of 3 young boys this sickens me beyond belief. My heart sank as i played with my youngest (19 months) whilst this came up on the news and the thought that someone could do this to an innocent young child is disguisting. My deepest condolences go to the Father and the rest of the family who im sure are suffering terribly.
What i must say is how can this happen again in Haringey? I believe procedures where in place but may not have been followed. Also how can such a large number of injuries to go unnoticed over what appears to be a fairly long length of time? I hope the report in to this finds the people in social services who may have allowed this to happen and they are punished accordingly.

RIP baby P

How can any one do this to a child, I have been following the story of baby P. I have cried many tears for him over the last year.
My only hope now is that these monsters get what is coming to them, unlike baby P who is now at peace, they will have to live with what they have done to him for the rest of their sorry lives.
You will be forever in my thoughts little man ****

From Justin Hinchcliffe, Haringey Conservatives:

"I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that Labour-run Haringey has learnt absolutely nothing from the tragic case of Victoria Climbie. Our Social Services department and the weak and incompetent leadership of local politicians are failing our vulnerable children. We were told that lessons would be learnt from Victoria Climbie's death. Anyone who has heard or read about the barbaric and evil treatment of Baby P cannot have failed to weep. As a Tottenham resident, I feel deeply saddened and angry; social workers visited Baby P on sixty occasions. It’s absolutely astonishing that no action was taken. Councillors Meehan and Santry - the Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Young People respectively and Sharon Shoesmith, the Director of Social Services, should immediately step down from their positions. Those doctors and social workers involved should be suspended pending an independent inquiry. That Inquiry should start as soon as possible. David Cameron was right to raise the matter at Prime Minister's Question Time. Gordon Brown had an opportunity to speak for the Nation and tell us how best we can avoid these terrible tragedies and support the growing number of calls for an independent Inquiry. Not only did he fail, he sought to score cheap political points. He misjudged the mood of the whole House and of the Nation."

Please someone tell me how I cope with the knowledge of this tragic case? I cannot stop crying when I think about what has happened and what this poor vulnerable and voiceless baby went through. I know social workers are overworked and it is no one individuals fault but there has to be something that can be done to make sure this never happens again.
Can we all try and keep an eye out in our own neighbourhoods? not feel afraid to call the police or NSPCC if we suspect any child is in danger?
I have a 9month old boy myself and am finding it hard to cope with the recent news about this case.
Thank god this little baby died when he did because it is patently obvious that after 60 vists by social services no one was prepared to release him from his living hell, I only wish it had happened sooner for him than when it did.
I am glad you are free and pain free little darling boy.

I too have followed this case ever since his death in August 2007, I have a little baby boy 17months old too and I am so grateful I was gifted with this gorgeous child. I don't understand why it was ok to name this baby along with the monsters a year ago but not now? Why? Did she have other children? Also, why in god's name did the 15 year old girl not tell someone about this abuse, instead of "going out for a cigarette when they pulled out his fingernails as she couldn't bear the screaming"? Please don't let this case be forgotten about and I hope and pray they receive in life tenfold times 100 what they did to Baby P. RIP Baby always in my thoughts.xxxxxxxxxx

What a shame that the most these MONSTERS can only get a max sentance of 14 years..
Lets hope the judge doesn't go easy on any of them.
I feel sorry for the rest of the family. May they some day be able to have a happy life even without lovely baby P. xxx
