Visitors pay tribute to Baby P memorial

Tributes, toys and flowers are flooding in to the memorial to Baby P, the 17-month old boy tortured to death in his Tottenham home.

The ashes of the toddler, who was subjected to a regime of horrific abuse by his mother’s boyfriend and lodger Jason Owen, 36, were scattered in Islington and St Pancras Cemetery after his death in August last year.

His 27-year-old mother, who failed to stop the abuse, pleaded guilty to allowing the death of Baby P and the two men were convicted of causing or allowing the death of the child last week.

The killing has created a tide of anger and grief across the nation and this week wellwishers have travelled to the High Road ceremony to leave cuddly toys, flowers, balloons and heart-felt messages at a memorial to Baby P.

One message reads: “I came here today with my baby girl, who is about your age, and when I look at her it is completely beyond me how anybody could hurt an innocent baby.

“As a mother I can’t comprehend it. I want you to know there are good people in the world and many of them, including myself, would have been over-joyed to be your mummy.”

Another wellwisher wrote: “I hope you’re with the angels now and in peace. You are loved by a whole nation, including me and my family. You will always be in our hearts for ever as if you were one of our own.”

Another added simply: “Rest in peace Baby P - you’re safe. No one can harm you any more.”

Messages came from as far afield as Cornwall and small groups arrived throughout the afternoon today to leave flowers and pay tribute to Baby P.

Sue Cini, 53, from Stamford Hill, lost her own son five years ago in a car crash when he was 20-years-old. She wept as she stood by Baby P’s memorial.

“How could a mother do that to her child,” she said. “It’s hard enough when you lose your own child, let alone doing this. You never come to terms with losing your child.

“I can’t believe someone could be so evil. His own mum, who gave birth to him.”
