DRIVERS desperately trying to stay safe in the snow were attacked by snowball-wielding thugs who smashed car windows with tightly packed snowballs.

The incident took place this morning as snow-loving families descended on Alexandra Palace Park to enjoy the views and sledge down the steep hills.

As drivers tried to negotiate the slippery roads, they were surrounded by increasingly aggressive youths throwing snowballs at them and causing them to swerve.

Police officers, who had been called at 10.30am to help with a car accident, heard about the attacks and investigated.

They moved the snowballers on with the help of security.

Duty inspector Simon French said: "There are a large number of people legitimately enjoying the park, but there are a small minority irresponsibly seeking their thrills by aiming snowballs at vehicles.

"This behaviour is extremely dangerous and anyone causing criminal damage will be dealt with.

"We urge drivers to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions and not to travel unless completely necessary."
