Spurs captain Ledley King, 28, has issued a formal apology after being arrested on suspicion for assault early this morning.

The Tottenham defender was arrested at 2.30am in connection with an alleged assault on a man outside Punk nightclub club in Soho Street.

He was later released on bail.

"I sincerely regret that a night out with friends went too far", King said on the Tottenham Hotspur website.

"I have apologised to Harry [Redknapp] and I fully appreciate that, as a professional footballer, I have a duty to behave in a responsible manner.

"I am assisting the police with their enquiries. Anyone who knows me, knows that much of what has been suggested is totally out of character.

"I am keen to resolve this as soon as possible and concentrate on my football. I shall be putting my all into ensuring I give of my best for the remaining fixtures."

The alleged victim, Wahib Butt, a doorman at Punk, said King punched him in the face after he refused the Premiership footballer entry because he "was so drunk".

The bouncer told Sky News: "We refused him to come inside, again because he was so drunk."

Mr Butt declined medical treatment at the scene of the alleged attack.
