David Bentley apologises after drunken crash David Bentley apologises after drunken crash

TOTTENHAM football star David Bentley has apologised to his club and fans after crashing his £80,000 sports car near Brookmans Park following a drunken binge.

The Spurs midfielder and England international was arrested and charged with drink driving in the ealry hours of yesterday morning after crashing his Porsche Turbo in Judges Hill, Northaw. He was taken to Hatfield Police Station.

Bentley, 24, who has been capped nine times by England, is reported to have spent the evening drinking with Australian rock band Jet, following a gig in East London.

In a statement on his club's website, Bentley wrote: "I should like to apologise to my club and the supporters for my actions which led to my car accident last night and my subsequent charge. It was wholly unacceptable and I fully appreciate that as a professional footballer I have a duty to behave in a reputable and responsible manner. I am thankful that nobody was injured in the accident. This has been a wake-up call for me both personally and professionally."

The footballer has been bailed to appear before St Albans Magistrates Court on August 28.

Bentley hit the headlines last month when he was punched in the face - in what he claimed was an unprovoked attack - as he sat in Nolita Bar in Great North Road, Brookmans Park with his pregnant girlfriend.
