AN ORGANISATION that equips adults with practical job skills, and access to employment celebrated becoming a centre of excellence with a glittering awards ceremony.

Not-for-profit adult learning provider 5E Ltd, based in the Selby Centre, in Selby Road, Tottenham was awarded Beacon Status in July following exemplary marks in leadership and management from Oftsed, endorsements from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

It has an impeccable record in helping unemployed residents finding work by improving literacy, numeracy, IT and customer service skills.

The accolade means the centre is recognised as a leader in its field and is in a position to advise similar organisations in methods of good practice.

Graduates from the scheme celebrated their achievements at a graduation ceremony held last Friday and were congratulated by Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone.

Ms Featherstone said: "5E really is exceptional. It helps people gain the skills and qualifications needed for better jobs, and to act as a stepping stone for a brighter future. And in doing that, they have done such an amazing job that they now are seen as a shining beacon - leading the way for other organisations in the field.

"In difficult times, places like 5E are true life savers, and that’s why I’m so happy to be here today to share the success with hundreds of local residents. Well done to Raj, his remarkable staff and the many successful graduates for their outstanding work."

Director Raj Doshi set up the centre which works closely with Black and Minority Ethnics communities (BME) in 1998 and the centre has since developed into north London's biggest employer and key skills trainer with centres in Haringey, Enfield and Barnet.

The centre carries out special work with refugees such as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and also offers NVQs at no cost through its Train to Gain programme.

And a special project for residents in Barnet will see people get the chance to work as volunteers during London 2012 Olympics.

Lab technician Mohamed Sultan, of White Hart Lane, said: "After graduating from university I really struggled to find work. I often came to the Selby Centre because it's such a fantastic community resource and I saw a sign for 5E.

"With their advice and support, I was able to get a part-time job at North Middlesex Hopsital. There's a chance I might go full-time but, if not, I now have some experience under my belt when applying for other jobs."
