Tottenham's past explored in new book

A TOTTENHAM historian has published a book exploring the area's glamourous past and how its relationship with migration first started.

Tottenham - A History by written by Christine Protz, of Seymour Avenue, Tottenham Hale, will be launched next week.

The book's author retired from her job in Haringey Council's social services department five years ago and has been working on the book since then.

Ms Protz said: I've been involved in local history projects for some time now and produced a couple of photographic books which cover the more recent history of Tottenham in the 19th and 20th centuries.

"But I was keen to try and cover all of the area's history in chronological order. There are written records for the area going back to the Norman Conquest and the Domesday Book.

"It has a very interesting history. It was originally owned by manor lords and was fairly independent from the church and the monarchy and had links to the Scottish royal family.

"It's always been an area of migration. In Tudor times, people came from London to build big houses here and people would travel through as they travelled to and from the north."

Research for the book was carried out at Bruce Castle Museum, going through other books as well as online records.

The book will be launched by The Big Green Bookshop and Haringey Council's libraries and culture service at Wood Green Central Library on Thursday, December 3 at 7.30pm.
