Hospital launches investigation into escaped killer

AN Edmonton hospice has launched an investigation into how a convicted killer escaped last night.

Fida Mohammed Utmanzi, 20, absconded from North London Clinic, in Church Street, Edmonton, at around 7.30pm.

He was detained indefinitely under the mental health act after being convicted of the manslaughter of Rasool Khan at the Old Bailey on January 8.

When contacted by the Enfield Independent, the hospital said it was "unable to say" how the patient escaped, but has launched an internal investigation.

Peter Handy, North London Clinic regional executive director, said: “Security and the safety of our patients and the community is at the forefront of our concerns and we are working extremely closely with the local authorities to ensure the patient is returned to the facility as quickly as possible.

"An internal investigation is underway to find out exactly what went wrong and to prevent such incidents in the future.”

Police were alerted by the hospital shortly after Utmanzi escaped.

Utmanzi was born in Afghanistan and was last seen wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms with white stripes on the sides. He was also wearing a navy blue hooded top and grey trainers.

He is 6ft 1in tall and thin with short black hair. He is also known to have cigarette burns on his arms.

Utmanzi has previous connections to the Tottenham, Fulham and Putney areas of London, and has spent time in Newcastle.

Police are advising the public not to approach Utmanzi, but to call them immediately on 999.

Anyone who may have other information about his whereabouts is asked to call detectives on 07717 483 332.
