THE landlord of a Wood Green family pub is being celebrated on St Patrick's Day by his Irish customers as a thank you for the complimentary Sunday dinners he lays on.
Cyprior Huseyin Azer, of The Welcome Inn, in Lordship Lane, took over the 30-year-old pub eight months ago and since then has offered free sandwiches and Sunday dinners to his loyal customers.
But the Irish community has now clubbed together to return the favour on St Patrick's Day and have cooked up a traditional Irish stew and soda bread to show their gratitude.
Mr Azer, a married father-of-two, said: "It is very good of the customers to do this as a thank you.
"They have taken care of all the cooking today."
When asked why he puts on the free spread, the landlord, a professional caterer, said: "Yes, it costs me some money, but these are my customers who keep me in business. It is just a little something to say I appreciate them.
"We are a family pub. We don't have any violence here or anything like that. It has that sense of community."
Haringey has a flourishing Irish community with more than 8,988 residents — four per cent of Haringey's total population — hailing from an Irish background.
