Haringey puts on extra collections for Passover rubbish

SPECIAL rubbish bins and collections will be available for Haringey's Jewish community in the run-up to Passover starting today.

The community skips will be placed at different locations in Seven Sisters to cater for the borough's Jewish population who live in the area.

Passover celebrates the Israelites' exodous out of Egypt.

Practising Jews spend the weeks before Passover disposing of goods that contain flour and yeast, Chametz, to mark the Israelites' swift departure which meant bread that had been baked had no time to rise.

The consumption of Chametz is prohibited during Passover in most Jewish traditions, Matzo, a flat bread, is eaten instead.

Cabinet member for housing, environment and conservation, Councillor John Bevan, said: "Haringey has a diverse community and I'm pleased we are able to offer these extra services for observers of the Jewish faith.

"We are committed to working with local communities to ensure that streets and public spaces are attractive, well-used and clean."

On selected dates, residents can also dispose of bulky items such as mattresses and other furniture. White goods such as TVs, fridges and cookers are excluded as these items will be collected from residents' front gardens on March 29, 2010.

A thorough sweep of those sites will follow to ensure the area is left neat and tidy.
