TOTTENHAM children became the stars of a road safety DVD designed for ethnic communities.

Children and parents at Woodlands Park Children's Centre filmed the commercial in December, and this week took centre stage yet again when they helped launch the DVD.

Haringey's road safety team chose Woodlands Park Children's Centre, in Woodlands Park Road, to take part in the DVD because many of the children come from the ethnic communities the DVD is targeting.

Certain ethnic communities, particularly the black community, are more likely to be killed or seriously injured than other groups.

Communities living within areas of deprivation are at least twice as likely to be killed or seriously injured on London roads.

Ethnic minority parents coming from rural environments or parents unfamiliar with traffic conditions in this country may lack the knowledge to give their children the appropriate traffic skills, the council said.

Councilllor Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "Good safety skills are vital to all road users. It is important that children from all ethnic backgrounds have access to road safety materials that they can relate to and have fun with.

"The DVD will be interactive and include different road safety messages for different groups. It will provide teachers, parents and community workers with easy, practical ways to teach road safety."

The under fives toddler group were selected to feature in the DVD after TfL staff heard them sing in an X-Factor style audition.
