PICCADILLY Line passengers may have to wait four years to learn if the much-heralded upgrade will actually go ahead.
Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground, told politicians on Tuesday that funding for the work is not in place, and whether funding is coming at all may not be know until the en d of the Parliament, in 2015.
The line is placed after the Northern Line and the troubled Jubilee Line upgrade, and delays on the latter project have set all the others back as well.
Joanne McCartney, London assembly member for Enfield and Haringey, reacted with dismay at the news, which was revealed at a London Assembly Transport Committee meeting.
She said: “This is yet another setback for our main tube line in Enfield and Haringey.
“Residents were frustrated last year when we heard that the upgrade wouldn’t be completed by 2014 – even though the Mayor had previously said it would be.
“And the revelation today is that we have to wait another four years to find out if it’s going to happen at all.”
The upgrade work on the Piccadilly Line will increase capacity by 24 per cent and slash journey times by 19 per cent.
