A HOST of events are being held in Tottenham today in the name of boosting civic pride.

A metal of sculpture of a bus by artist Sokari Douglas Camp will be unveiled at midday at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre as the centrepiece of Tottenham Civic Day.

The sculpture is a tribute to campaigner Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was executed by the Nigerian government in 1995. It has been touring the country for the last five years and will now be in residence in Tottenham for the next year.

John Baraldi, chief executive of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, in Town Hall Approach, said: “We are extremely happy that we will be the new home for Sokari Douglas Camp’s incredible sculpture – and that we can use Tottenham Civic Day to officially welcome the artwork to the Centre and the community.

“Bernie Grant worked tirelessly to defend the rights of all sections of our society, and was a passionate advocate for social justice, so the fit between artwork and space could not be better.”

The day will also see tours of the newly refurbished Tottenham Town Hall, between 11am and 1pm, showing off the restoration work done to the Edwardian building.

And the New Tottenham Singers will be performing a concert at midday in the Moselle Road of the town hall.

The choir was only formed in November last year and has been working hard to perform at a range of venues and events in Tottenham.
