LIBERAL Democrats have attacked the detail of funding commitments for three children's centres facing cuts.

After an initial plan to close four children's centres was rejected by campaigners and headteachers, Haringey Council voted on Thursday approved a new plan to provide one-off funding to any group wanting to take over three of the groups.

All other funding will still be withdrawn from the Highgate, Rokesly and Northbank centres, and no services will be maintained at the linked Tower Gardens site – meaning it will definitely close.

But Liberal Democrat spokesperson for children, Councillor Katherine Reece, argued that the level of detail in the proposals – which do not mention a specific amount of money – show that Labour have not yet committed to the plan.

She said: “Unified opposition forced the cabinet member to rethink Labour’s plans and we all welcomed further funding for North Bank, Highgate, and Rokesly.

“Yet, nearly two months on, we have a no commitment from the Council on funding and no detail on what services local families can expect.

“Labour need to state now their funding intentions and show some commitment to these superb Children’s Centres.”

The plan has been the subject of a long-running battle after May's initial plan was heavily criticised and rejected by headteachers and managers and sent back to the council to reconsider.

And the new proposal is also likely to be the subject of fierce debate between Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors before any closures – scheduled for next March – take place.
