TRAFFIC on a Tottenham road was brought to a standstill when a lorry struck the railway bridge.

The B&Q articulated lorry caused damage to yellow and black metal warning stripes on the front of the bridge, over West Green Road, as it tried to pass underneath.

The owner of nearby Cobblers Lodge, who witnessed the crash, said: “He’d got most of the cab underneath but then got the trailer wedged.

“He obviously didn’t know the height of his truck because it clearly says 15 feet on the bridge.”

The lorry managed to reverse out from under the bridge, but then struggled to turn around as traffic mounting up along the road.

It fell to passerby Michael Clarke to direct cars to back up to give the lorry enough room to maneuvre.

He said: “It was obvious that the man was in a problem. It’s a big vehicle and what’s the alternative? Getting stuck under there and then the road would have been jammed all day.

“I thought I might as well do something useful instead of people getting out of their cars and getting all crazy.”

Once clear, the lorry driver drove away.

B&Q said it was looking into the incident.
