A leaked email sent by the deputy mayor of Haringey has dismissed public safety fears surrounding a Tottenham redevelopment as nothing but “rubbish.”

Councillor for Northumberland Park, Sheila Peacock, was alerted via email on Sunday to the “serious potential risk” the Wards Corner development could pose to passengers using Seven Sisters Tube station below.

However, Cllr Peacock sent an abrupt one-word response last night from her work email, claiming the safety fears raised by transport company London Underground Limited (LUL) are “RUBBISH.”

The email response was sent to Roy Jose – member of the Wards Corner Community Coalition, who is campaigning to protect the site from being transformed by developers Grainger.

Mr Jose today forwarded the email to every single councillor in the borough, including the mayor of Haringey, councillor David Browne.

Councillor Jonathan Bloch told the Haringey Independent he is shocked by the deputy mayor’s response and believes she should apologise for her comments.

He said: "I am shocked at the comments by the deputy mayor. It shows such a blatant disregard for local residents' safety.

"The deputy mayor should be listening to the concerns raised rather than saying they are rubbish. I hope that she will reconsider her comments and apologise."

This is not the first time that the deputy mayor’s comments have caused offence.

In 2004, she sparked controversy when she was overheard swearing at protestors who gathered outside Haringey Civic Centre to oppose the closure of homes for elderly people.
