Neighbours of a house which had its roof gutted by fire say they were shocked and scared when they saw the flames.

The roof the two storey house in Stirling Road, Wood Green, caught fire yesterday afternoon, just after 4.30pm.

Neighbours from adjacent houses were evacuated from their homes by fire crews as precaution.

Tahmina Begun, who is 37 weeks pregnant, lives next door to the house with her husband and two children.

She said: “When I saw the flames I was so scared for the children and our safety. Thankfully our neighbour let us in his house. I was so upset because I thought we could lose everything.”

Rabby Malik, who saw the fire from across the road, said: “I looked out the window and at first I thought I could see fog in the street.

“I went outside and I could see the smoke coming from the roof of the house. Then flames started coming out and within five minutes the whole roof was on fire.

“It was just so quick and before long the flames were 10ft high. I’ve never seen anything like it, I was so shocked and I couldn’t believe something like that was happening.”

The fire damaged part of a loft conversion of an adjacent house and the cause of the fire still under investigation.

The Fire Brigade were called just after 4.30pm with four engines from Hornsey, Tottenham and Edmonton at the scene and had the fire under control just after 7pm.
