Black History Month exhibition in Tottenham celebrates life of slave turned wealthy American, Venture Smith

An exhibition celebrating the life of a man who escaped slavery to head an American dynasty will kick of Haringey’s Black History Month celebrations.

The exhibition, Making Freedom: The Life of Venture Smith, will be shown in the Marcus Garvey Library in Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, Phillip Lane, from October 2 until November 30.

The display will tell the story of Venture Smith, a slave who brought himself, his wife, and four children, out of slavery and went on to accumulate wealth and establish a family dynasty in America.

Black History Month takes place in the UK every October with the intention of celebrating and remembering the important people and events in the history of black people.
