Tottenham misses out in latest Enterprise Zone announcement

TOTTENHAM has again missed out as the latest round of zones to boost economic growth were announced by the Government.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced four new Enterprise Zones in Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham and Bristol today, leaving only ten slots remaining from the 21 revealed in March's budget.

The zones have up to 100 per cent discounts on business rates, free fast broadband, and relaxed planning restrictions, and are designed for major urban renewal schemes.

Tottenham MP David Lammy joined Haringey Council leader Claire Kober and London Assembly member Joanne McCartney went to City Hall last month to deliver a plan for a zone covering Tottenham and Edmonton.

At the time, Mr Lammy said: “Getting an enterprise zone for Tottenham is vital to the future of all of our residents. On behalf of the people of Tottenham, we say to Boris – give us an enterprise zone.”

The zone is thought to be central to Spurs' redevelopment of White Hart Lane – dubbed the Northumberland Park Project.

But the project has stalled over spiralling costs for the club, which then began looking at alternatives including the Olympic Stadium.

Winning the bid would also boost Edmonton's regeneration scheme – including the refit of Edmonton Green Shopping Centre and improved transport links wanted by Enfield Council.

The Treasury said today that the winners of the remaining ten slots would be announced shortly.
