As the Green Party candidate at the Highgate by-election, I was appalled to hear the news that the much-used post office in Highgate Village is set for closure. The high street has already suffered much in recent years, with more and more estate agents opening, along with a Tesco and coffee chains taking away business from local shops and spoiling the uniqueness of this wonderful enclave.
The post office is a hub of local life - always busy and providing a great range of wares, meaning people do not have to travel to far-off shopping centres to buy everyday essentials. Indeed, many older people are unable to travel great distances and the local post office is a lifeline and an important part of retaining independence.
I would encourage all people to make their feelings known about this ludicrous decision before it is too late.
