In a bold initiative to tackle the problems of pollution created by vehicle emissions, London's Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone has introduced a low emission zone to restrict the number of gas-guzzlers, high-powered sports cars and luxury vehicles, travelling through our city streets.
This will help reduce greenhouse gas emmissions, which contribute to global warming, and will improve air quality which, at present, is killing 1,000 Londoners a year.
While Ken's initiative has been welcomed by environmentalists, the Lib Dems - in the guise of Haringey's Fortis Green councillor Martin Newton - are whingeing. This time they are complaining there has not been enough consultation.
The Lib Dems' own consultation exercises, though, are merely a ruse to gather peoples' contact details to add to their mailing lists, and an excuse to avoid taking any real decisions themselves.
That's the trouble with the spineless Lib Dems. They want others to take the lead - and the tough decisions - while they enjoy the luxury of carping on the sidelines.
