I was shocked to see the Council Tax bills sent out by Haringey this week included a letter dated over 5 weeks ago (17 February).
I wouldn’t normally be that surprised by council inefficiency, but on this occasion it has left council tax payers with little time to complete direct debit forms or apply for concessions (all of which have to be returned by post, processed by the council and then forwarded to banks and building societies in time for April 1).
Luckily I’ve just managed to do mine as I had a couple of days off from work, but I do worry about people who maybe have to travel because of work or who are in hospital perhaps. It seems quite underhand putting a false date on a letter that creates the impression local residents have had 5 weeks to comply with, when in fact we’ve only had a few days. Is it too much to ask for more honesty (or efficiency) from our local public servants?
