Haringey Borough claim FA Vase win over Southall
2:36pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in Sport
Haringey Borough won 2-0 away at Southall in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.
The visitors started the match brightly and created the first real chance of the game.
A cross by Anthony McDonald found Dean Fenton unmarked at the far post but he could not direct his free header downwards and it flew inches over the angle of bar and post.
It was a Southall corner which led to Boro’s opening goal when a quick clearance found the home side short of numbers at the back.
Dewayne Clarke seized the chance to run down the right wing before slipping a well weighted pass through to McDonald and he unleashed a low shot into the net.
Haringey should have been 2-0 up before the interval thanks to another fine run by McDonald who drove the ball low across the goalmouth for the onrushing Darrell Cox but he fired wide from just yards out.
Boro started the second half strongly but wasted several decent chances as even McDonald’s finishing touch deserted him.
Fenton was unlucky when a 25-yard strike seemed destined for the top corner only to swerve fractionally wide.
But he visitors sealed the cup win in the 88th minute when right-back Cedric Lakole sent over a low cross which Cox dummied leaving the unmarked Fenton to side foot home from the six-yard line.
Their reward in the next round is a home game against Wellingborough Town of the United Counties League Premier Division on Saturday, September 21.
Haringey travel to face Wembley for the first qualifying round of the FA Cup this weekend.
