Haringey Borough extended their unbeaten run in the Essex Senior League to six games with a 2-0 win against Barking which keeps their push for promotion alive.

A Walid Matata double secured the three points against an energetic Barking side.

It wasn’t until the 67th minute, when Matata pounced on a mix-up in the Barking defence to open the scoring.

Matata then sealed the win ten minutes later. When a handball in the box allowed him to finish from the penalty spot.

Borough’s were thwarted by impressive Barking keeper Damos Horvath, who was at Haringey last season. The best of his saves came from a dipping Lee Allen shot, which he tipped over the bar.

The victory gets Haringey back to winning ways after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Southern Manor on Saturday.

Lawrence Constanti was first to test the linesman’s perception, with a powerful shot from the edge of the area that appeared to hit the net support inside the top of the far post.

Darrell Cox then smashed a shot against the underside of the bar, leaving doubt in everyone’s minds, except Cox, who was adamant his effort crossed the line.

Haringey searched for a winner but despite having scored 17 goals in the previous four games they were left frustrated.

Last Friday, Haringey were more clinical as they put four past Bowers and Pitsea in a dominant 4-1 win.

Borough, who can boast a goal difference of plus 30 this season, were efficient in attack.

Matata grabbed a hat-trick in a superb man of the match performance.

Haringey Borough play second placed Tower Hamlets on Saturday in a match which is sure to play a telling role in the side’s promotion hopes.

While Borough currently sit in fifth, their league position is slightly misleading given they have at least two games in hand on the teams around them.
