Haringey Borough kept the pressure on Essex Premier Division leaders Great Wakering Rovers heading into the final day of the season after extending their unbeaten run to 18 games.

Boro were set to host Stansted last night [Thursday] and a victory would help them retain hopes of winning the title this weekend.

Haringey end their league campaign with a home game against Takeley tomorrow [Saturday] while Rovers can seal top spot if they win at Basildon.

Three first-half goals from Boro helped them ease to a 3-0 victory at home to Tower Hamlets on Tuesday night.

Anthony McDonald was put through on goal by Darrell Cox in the 14th minute for a close-range finish although there appeared to be a suspicion of offside which was not given. In the 23rd minute a sweeping move enabled Dean Fenton to pick his spot from close range. The hosts extended their lead in the 32nd minute after a thunderous 20-yard free-kick from Fenton.

The visitors displayed some decent approach play early on but were obviously deflated by the three Borough goals and never gave keeper Ashley Harris any cause for concern. Boro should have added to their total in the second half but missed a series of gilt edged chances which could prove costly if goal difference is decisive at the end of the season.

Tom Loizou’s side were in ruthless form on Saturday as they eased to a 4-0 win at Eton Manor.

An away victory never looked to be in doubt after they secured a two-goal lead in the first quarter of an hour.

Fenton had an early chance but was thwarted by the keeper in a one-on-one situation and minutes later Charles Douse was alert and nodded away for a corner after a routine long ball into the area was allowed to bounce.

The lead was secured in the fifth minute when Fenton sped away down the right flank to drive across a low centre which McDonald lifted into the top corner at the near post. The hosts thought they had equalised when a statuesque defence allowed Paul Inkpen to head home unchallenged from close range but an assistant’s offside flag cut short their celebrations.

Boro doubled their lead through Fenton’s crisp finish in the 14th minute. The match was effectively won in the 35th minute when McDonald finished off a flowing move instigated by Daniel Aristidou’s mazy run and superb close control.

After that it was largely a procession of many chances created by Haringey but only Fenton found the net again in the 75th minute. Boro keeper Austin Byfield was called upon to produce one fine save when he smothered a swerving free-kick at the foot of his right hand post and later held on well to a 20-yard snapshot but there was little serious threat to the visitors.
