Tottenham Hotspur's Andros Townsend holds talks with Tim Sherwood in bid to salvage World Cup chances
Andros Townsend has held talks with Tim Sherwood in a last-ditch attempt to break back into the Spurs first team and salvage his chances of a place at this summer’s World Cup.
The 22-year-old shone for England on his full senior debut against Montenegro in October but, having not made a league start for Tottenham since he returned from injury in early February, a call-up for Brazil looks in doubt for the out-of-favour winger.
With just three games of the season remaining, and the likes of Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain knocking on the door for a seat on the plane, Townsend revealed he has held talks with Spurs head coach Sherwood about salvaging his season.
He told the Haringey Independent: “I’ve known Tim for years obviously and I’ve had a good chat with him about what he wants to see.
“It is disappointing – no player likes to be on the bench. I’m just trying to fight to get back into the team.
“I’m hoping to get a place in the last three games and, if not, I’ll be working hard in pre-season ready for next year.”
Townsend admits it would be “a dream” to go to the World Cup this summer, but says he is solely focused on rediscovering his form in the Premier League.
He said: “I’m just focusing on Tottenham and the next three games here. For any kid it would obviously be a dream to represent your country in the biggest competition in world football but I’m just concentrating on getting back in the team here.”
Tottenham’s own league campaign has somewhat petered out after a disappointing season, but Townsend insists the players are still motivated to secure a Europa League spot after seemingly missing out on the top four.
He said: “The Europa League is a prestigious competition – they are all top nations that compete in it. Next year’s winners qualify for the Champions League I think I’m right in saying so it’s a competition we’re looking to be involved in.”
