Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King believes the club has “the nucleus of a good squad” and says wholesale changes are not needed this summer.

During the summer transfer window, Spurs sold talisman Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record fee of £85.3million, providing a cash injection to sign new players.

The club spent over £100million on seven new signings, including Christian Eriksen, Roberto Soldado and Paulhino.

But Tottenham finished a disappointing 6th in the Premier League following a mid-season managerial change.

Former club captain King said: “We are not far away as a team but we are still not sure what’s going to happen over the summer. We don’t need wholesale changes, we have the nucleus of a good squad.

“There are some good young players who can develop into real talent. The club is on the way up and we have to reassess things again after the last year or two due to the manger changes but we are not far away.

“We need to keep our form, our league position and not drift far away and hopefully strengthen.

“The new players have had a season in the premiership and that gives us some optimism going into next year.”
