Tottenham Hotspur's record signing, Erik Lamela, will train with former employers River Plate in a bid to improve his fitness this summer, according to the Independent.

The 22-year-old left-winger endured an incredibly frustrating first season in England following his £30m switch from Roma, making just ten starts in all competitions and just three in the Premier League.

Lamela was hampered by injury and a lack of fitness followin his arrival from Italy but never came close to performing the role expected of him - namely replacing Real Madrid-bound Gareth Bale.

Following the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach, it appears Spurs will not give up on the Aregntine international, who will train with first club River Plate in order to improve his fitness for the new season.

The six-cap Argentina international has been linked with a return to Italy with Internazionale but this latest move appears to indicate Pochettino is keen to try and get the best from the pacey attacker.
