Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld has reportedly undergone a medical ahead of his proposed move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgian centre-back, 26, is at the centre of a tug-of-war between Southampton - with whom he spent last season on loan - and Spurs.

He impressed on loan at St Mary's last term and made 26 Premier League appearances for the Saints, who had been keen to make his stay on the South Coast permanent.

However, Mauricio Pochettino's side appear to have moved ahead in the race for his services with Sky Sports News reporting he has undergone a medical with the White Hart Lane side this morning.

It was reported yesterday the Saints will lodge a legal challenge should Atleti sell the former Ajax defender to another club after it was revealed under the terms of his loan agreement Southampton had first refusal for an agreed price of £6.8 million.

There was, however, a clause which meant Atletico buy out that opriob for £1.5 million, enabling them to sell the Wilrijk-born centre-half the highest bidder.

It is understood there was a deadline for the Spanish outfit to take up that option, though, and Southampton claim that has passed.

Alderweireld began his professional career with Dutch side Ajax in 2008 and spent five years in the Netherlands racking up 128 Eredivisie appearances and winning three league titles.

He also won the KNVB Cup and the Dutch Super Cup during a trophy-laden spell at the Amsterdam ArenA

In 2013 he moved to La Liga side Atletico for a fee of €7 million but after making just ten league starts in his first year at the Vicente Calderon, he joined the Saints on loan last summer.
